How Profhilo® Cosmetic Injections Work

Reviewed by Dr. Ian S. Little

As our bodies age, the skin becomes thinner, wrinkled, and stretchy. In addition to losing fat and muscle, these signs of ageing are caused by a decrease in collagen and elastin production. Profhilo® is a hyaluronic acid (HA) cosmetic injectable that stimulates collagen and elastin production. These two proteins improve your skin’s structure & stretchiness, resulting in a tighter, healthier appearance.

But how exactly does it work? And how does it compare to other cosmetic injectables like Botox and fillers? Find out everything you need to know about Profhilo to see if it’s the right fit for your cosmetic needs.

How Profhilo Cosmetic Injections Work

Profhilo injections are placed at five points on each side of the face the HA is distributed evenly thanks to the unique hybrid cooperative complex. As it spreads across and to deeper layers of skin, the naturally-occurring hyaluronic acid acts as a messenger cell to promote collagen and elastin production.

It’s most often used to treat loose, sagging skin on the mid-lower parts of the face, neck, décolletage, hands, and even knees. The results of Profhilo gradually appear in the weeks following treatment, though the best results “peak” 4-6 months after injection. Studies have shown that new collagen has a life of up to 15 years. So even years after the first injection, the anti-aging effects of the Profhilo will still be present.

The treatment course is standard across all individuals. The same volume (2 mL) and injection points are used for optimal HA distribution and the two initial treatments are set one month apart, followed by maintenance treatments every 6-12 months which can further improve results. Each appointment lasts just 15 minutes with no downtime, meaning you can walk out the door with younger skin the same day.

Before & After Results from Profhilo

There may be a small amount of swelling near each injection site for the first 24 hours, but there’s no recovery or downtime needed after Profhilo. And unlike Botox or filler, it does not restrict muscle movements or immediately alter your appearance.

Profhilo vs. Other Cosmetic Injectables

Profhilo is an effective skin tightening treatment, but it’s not the only option. And depending on your beauty goals, another cosmetic injectable might be better suited for you. Let’s take a look at how it compares to other popular cosmetic injections.

Profhilo vs. Botulinum Toxin A

Botulinum Toxin A, more commonly known as Botox (see disclaimer), is an anti-wrinkle injection used to treat frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet around the eyes. “Botox®” is just one of the three brands we use at Transform Clinic. The active ingredient in Botulinum Toxin Ais clostridium botulinum, which occurs naturally in soils and spores around the world.

The full effects of Botox are visible in just 10-14 days as opposed to 4-6 months. But fast results don’t always mean better – Botox only lasts for 3-4 months before re-injections are required. Swelling is sometimes present immediately after injections, but should subside shortly after the treatment.

It’s generally a less expensive option than Profhilo, but the final cost will depend on the treatment area(s) and volume of product used.

Botox and Profhilo are both popular cosmetic injectables that can help you achieve your desired look. And though they serve different purposes using different chemicals, they can also be combined for a multimodal approach. Both are just a quick appointment away.

Profhilo vs. Filler

Fillers are another HA injection designed to add volume and lift to your skin, resulting in firmer, younger-looking skin and contours that enhance your appearance. They’re most effective at treating cheeks, lips, temples, jawlines, skin around the mouth, neck & décolletage area, and hands. And unlike Profhilo, they’re made from a lower concentration of hyaluronic acid that is meant to remain in a single place instead of spreading across the skin.

The injections are personalised to your individual facial structure, meaning the amount & location of product, as well as the injection techniques will vary from person to person. The results are immediately noticeable after your first 15-60 minute treatment, though best results appear 2 weeks post-injection and improve over the course of multiple sessions. Light to moderate swelling & bruising is also common but should disappear within the first 2 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Profhilo last?

Profhilo last 6-12 months which is longer than typical cosmetic injectables like Botox or fillers. Four to six months post-injection is when the results appear their best and maintenance treatments are recommended every 6-12 months as well.

Does Profhilo get rid of wrinkles?

Yes, it can get rid of wrinkles. In fact, it’s one of the primary uses for Profhilo. The hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin and promotes collagen & elastin production, eliminating wrinkles as the skin’s elasticity returns.

Who is the best candidate for Profhilo?
For younger clients, Profhilo can be used as a preventative treatment to maintain their body’s natural cell renewal cycles to produce fresher, clearer, younger-looking skin.

For those looking to restore their youthful appearance, Profhilo addresses existing cell depletion, including lost firmness, to decrease laxity, reduce dullness, and eliminate fine lines & creases. There is no upper age limit, though we don’t administer Profhilo to patients with bleeding disorders, immunocompromised disorders, or those with unrealistic beauty expectations.

What are the side effects of Profhilo?
Pinpoint bruising is a risk with any injectable; Profhilo is no different. And in extremely rare cases, allergic reactions, vascular compromise, and nerve damage is also possible.
