How long do fillers and Botox last? A guide to treatment longevity.

When investing in treatments such as Botox® / Anti-wrinkle or Dermal Fillers, one of the most common questions is “How long will my results last?” It is important to note that they are not permanent treatments and generally require repeat treatment to maintain your results. In this guide, we will break down the longevity of Botox and dermal fillers, and what affects their duration, and how you can extend your results for a refreshed and youthful look.

How long does Botox® last?

The answer depends on a number of different factors, including the area treated, amount of product, individual metabolism, and lifestyle habits. Anti-wrinkle treatments (e.g. Botox®, Xeomin, or Dysport®) typically last 4-6 months on average, but the duration can vary. The product takes 10-14 days to reach its full effect, and then it gradually wears off over the following months.

A longevity guideline by area treated:

Frown lines & Forehead: 3-6 months

Crow’s Feet: 2-4 months

Underarms for Sweating: 6-12 months

Why hasn’t my Botox® lasted?

If your Botox® hasn’t lasted as long as expected, there could be a number of potential reasons.

Not a high enough dose: One common factor is that the dose may not have been high enough to fully relax the targeted muscles. Everyone’s needs are different, and some areas require a higher dose to achieve longer-lasting results. Additionally, your ideal dose can change over time—natural aging, increased muscle strength, or lifestyle factors can all affect how long Botox® lasts and how much is needed to achieve the desired result. Some people naturally metabolise Botox® faster than others due to factors like a high metabolism, frequent exercise (especially intense cardio), or stress.

Timing of treatments: If treatments are done too soon, before the previous dose has fully worn off, the muscles will not respond as effectively, potentially leading to shorter-lasting results.

A consultation with your practitioner can help determine the best approach to maintain your results for longer. If you are unhappy with your result, do talk to your practitioner and they can adjust your treatment plan accordingly.

How can I extend my Botox® results?

Train your muscles: Unlearn frowning with regular treatments: while the recommended treatment is every 4-5 months, as your facial muscles begin to train themselves to contract less, or you become more aware of the movement and stop doing it as often, you may find your results start to last longer.

Follow your aftercare: avoid excessive exercise and saunas at least 24-48 hours after your treatment.

Healthy, hydrated skin: using high-quality skincare to keep your skin healthy and hydrated will help it maintain its elasticity and the results of Botox.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Dermal fillers can be used to restore volume to sunken areas, sculpt the face such as jawlines, cheeks, temples, and lips, as well as smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers are not permanent; they gradually break down and are naturally metabolized by the body over time. The results of the fillers could last anywhere from 4 months to 2 years, depending on a number of factors.

At Transform Clinic, we have a range of products on hand to offer, so we can choose what would best achieve your desired results, while maintaining a natural appearance. The longevity of filler depends on the type of product used, amount of filler, the area treated, needle depth, and the metabolism of the patient.

Longer lasting results are often achieved with each repeat treatment. Adding small amounts of filler over time is the key to achieving natural-looking, long-lasting results.
